These route suggestions will help you along your way, though you may wish to adjust your route depending on where in the park you plan to make your first destination.
Plan ahead with snacks and supplies when traveling to Borrego from any direction. There are rarely alternative routes in event of a temporary road closure and very limited amenities and cell service until you reach Borrego Springs.
From Palm Springs area — 75 minute drive
Take I-10 east to Highway 86 south. Proceed south to Salton City. Turn west on the Borrego-Salton Seaway (S-22). Drive for approximately 30 minutes and arrive in Borrego.
From San Diego — 2 hour drive
Take I-15 north to the Poway (S-4), then CA-67 north to Ramona, which turns into CA-78 east to Santa Ysabel. From here, north on CA-79, east on S-2, and east on the Borrego-Salton Seaway (S-22).
Alternatively, head east on I-8 past Alpine, north on CA-79 for 23 miles to Julian, west on CA-78, and north on Yaqui Pass Road (S3) to Borrego Springs. A longer option is to take I-8 to Ocotillo, follow the Southern Overland Stage Route north along S2, then east on CA-78 into Borrego.
From Los Angeles — 3 hours
Leave the city on any eastbound freeway and take I-15 south to Temecula. Take CA-79 south approximately 41 miles to S-2. East on S-2 for 4.5 miles and east on the Borrego-Salton Seaway (S-22) into Borrego.
Traveling with a RV or trailer from the NW
Directions to Borrego from the Temecula area will often take you down Montezuma Grade (S-22). This is a beautiful drive that winds down perhaps the most scenic entrance into the valley. However, due to its steep decline and tight curves, it can provide challenging for larger RVs and long trailers.
For a less winding road that will add about 20 minutes to your drive, continue on S-2 past the S-22 turnoff for approximately 12 miles. Turn east on CA-78 and proceed to Yaqui Pass Road (S-3). To get to the town of Borrego Springs, turn north on Yaqui Pass Road (S-3), go over the pass and merge onto Borrego Springs road. Along the way you will pass Tamarask Campground, Rams Hill Golf Course and LaCasa Del Zoro Resort.
