Calcite Mine Trail
This is a moderately strenuous, 4 mile, up and back hike is rewarded with interesting geologic topography along the way and fantastic views when you get to the top. Opportunity to explore slot canyons along the route. There is no actual mine site but you will see where they mined the seams prior to and during WWII. The hike starts on the jeep trail, which, in accordance with Anza-Borrgeo Desert State Park rules, is open to street legal vehicles. It is a fairly easy, though uphill hike, that is more difficult drive! Allow 3 to 5 hours.
To find the trail head, from Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs, head east on S22 for about 17 miles. Look for a large turnout on the north side of the road near mile marker 38. The trail starts at the display panel with information about the history of Calcite Mine.
For updates and latest conditions in the park see the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park website.
