Hell Hole Canyon
Stretch your legs, and head to the premiere native and natural palm oasis just west of town. With the backdrop of the San Ysidro mountains, free parking, and the seasonal opportunity to see a 20 foot waterfall, this hike is a favorite of locals and visitors alike! A clear trail heads west from the large parking area (which also has a bathroom). As the wide wash begins to narrow the trail becomes slightly less defined, but keep your eyes on the California fan palms in the distance and enjoy the route finding. Just past 2 miles you will pass through the first cluster of palms and if you continue on another 3/4 mile you will pass through a larger grove of palms, sycamore and cottonwood trees and eventually find yourself at Maidenhair Falls.
Also in the area are trails headed to the ABDSP visitor center to the north, Surprise Canyon trail departing from behind the bathrooms, and the opportunity to explore the California Riding and Hiking trail headed south up the ridge to Culp Valley. This amazing hike offers incredible views of Hell Hole Canyon and is a favorite among local trail runners. With four distinct trail opportunities, ample parking and a bathroom, all close to town, it is easy to see why Hell Hole Canyon is a great place to spend a day adventuring.
