The Slot
The Slot is one of the more popular adventures within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The slot itself is less than 1/2 mile long, but extremely memorable. The out and back version of this hike will be approximately one mile.
Starting above the canyon at the designated parking area, hike a short distance to the short but steep descent into the canyon. The canyon gradually becomes narrower and narrower; in places you must shimmy sideways to pass through. Bulky gear is ill advised. Eventually the canyon will open back up again. Turn around and head back into the slot to return to the parking lot.
To extend this trip to a 2-mile loop, continue out of the slot to meet up with a 4WD Road. Continue on that road for until you see a steep road to the west (left). Hike up that drop off, then follow the 4WD road south and east back to the car. This extension will be a fully exposed hike back to the parking lot. Be prepared with extra water.
As with all trails in the park, no pets are allowed in the Slot. Pets may walk on designated park roads on 6-foot standard leashes. Please do not plan to take your pet into the slot, and as always please do not leave your pets in unattended vehicles.
